In a pure democracy, the majority rules without constraint, which is why we don't have one (in theory). The electoral college exists because the states are sovereign in their own right (within constraints imposed by the constitution) and the smaller states would not have agreed to the union without influence beyond proportionality to their size/population.

You can disagree with the wisdom of that, but it's not some huge injustice: it was the whole point. It was intentional.
I agree with the above, the issue now is that the policy no longer works with what we actually have in terms of population concentration, economic power, and an interconnected economy that would never have been foreseen 250 years ago.
