Yet it leaves a lot of control in the hands of the individual. The state is forcing people to save money into a health saving account and get private insurance. If a person goes to the hospital for a cold he uses that account.
Right, which is basically... the individual mandate? But my point is that the only reason this system works is that by running the hospitals and tightly regulating the fees healthcare providers can charge, Singapore makes it possible for people to pay in the fashion they do. The only way to implement a system like this in the US would be for the government to set the salaries of doctors, etc. So while it seems like a perfectly good system as the Singaporeans have designed it, there's only limited applicability to the system in the US. Or not, who knows? What I want is a cheaper and better system that covers more people. I don't really care how it's done. But simply incanting, "SINGAPORE" to invoke the invisible hand isn't going to solve anything, and were they to actually get a real sense for how the system works there, I think most of the free marketers here would probably not be as excited about adopting it even if they could.
